STORY : We always want to teach about tube amps. How to make one. And in a level everyone could make it - completely newbie or experienced. So now, this year will be a good time as many people are staying home more than ever. And we finally have time to mockup something super easy, and for everyone can learn how to make a true “high quality” tube amp successfully.

So why get our amp-kit?

  • Most kit out there are meant for the process and learning only, and not very hi-fi sounding enough (sound flat and boring , not much highs and involvement, no bass / meat or impact …etc ). Our kit will make sure the amp you put together sound as good as our official product, same as its measurements / performance and spec.

  • We use true hi-fi grade output transformers : 40 hz to 20 khz. Most kit out there don’t and have narrower bandwidth , that’s why the highs are always rolled off / short, or the bass was woobly.

  • We use USA / CANADA make transformers - not from offshore , so all money goes back to Canada / USA. But other than that, all transformers we use are also make to the highest standard - meeting CE/SA/CSA compliance, and pressure tested for safety and durability.

  • EASY. First time using the solder? No problem. We’ve seen tube amp’s kit out there that came with a college grade thick booklet that has well over 50 pages - where as our kit will be more like 5 pages, with simply and easy to understand illustration and words.

  • SAFETY. Although we will make it simple for you, but we will still add all the safe guards for you, so even something went wrong, it won’t be too bad, and is always fused.

AMP - ZERO (Haven’t think of a name yet).

TDF View-Lays Rev-A 2021.JPG
  1. Base on one 6BM8 per channel (Total tubes : 2) - this tube is often use on vintage TV/Console / Radio …etc. It sound big and musical despite 3 watts.

  2. No more than 30 passive caps and resistors / one input and one volume control for simple hook up

  3. Simple speaker output and feedback network design and connections ( 0 and 8 ohms only - tubes always sound less sharp below 8 ohms anyway, although 6 ohms could drive more kinds of speakers on the book , but that’s like limiting the tube / amp to shine , and we pick sound over to convinience)

  4. Easy to read values / legends , so you won’t mistaken for another part.

  5. As long you follow the pictures we provided - and hook up the transformer wires (they are all colour coded, so you won’t solder it to the wrong place!). You already have 99% success rate in fire it up and produce beautiful tube sound that bring back your nostalgia.

    Simple SPEC:

    • Class A 3 Watts (Minimum) before distortion

    • Single Ended Design (There is one preamp section and one power section in each 6BM8, so you only need one 6BM8 to make an amp with)

    • Autobias design - maintenance-less , just replace new tubes once a while!

    • High Gain Input - so you got good gain and loudness (power amps on the other hand are lower gain, as it meant to be use with a preamp)

    • 8 Ohms Output - which means it will drive 8 - 16 ohms beautifully, opposite to solid state amps, when it’s above 8 ohms , tubes are actually more powerful! This is why the experience tube audiophiles will tells you 16 ohm speakers are meant for tubes!

Meanwhile we are busy writing up a simple assembly manual. As well photos are coming.

Soldering Station 101 - Get an American or Japanese soldering station - we use Weller and Hakko, we paid around $120 CAD or so for our Weller that use daily (the Mint-Green looking one) , do not use those cheaper ones - especially from offshore (no matter how fancy it looks), you will regret it and you will find your life much easier with Weller / Hakko - aka higher success rate and a better quality solder-joint. What we afraid is those offshore ones will not be hot enough to solder metal pieces, like the speakers binding post.

Feb 1st - 2021

We finally had the first unit running, and it sounds as good as any of our other SE type amps!

The quality of bass and clarity was a shock (tested with some high grade Russian 6BM8 tubes ) , so is the drive and performance it offers with just 3 Watts!

We are very satisfied with its sound , considered the source was just a $20 NAD FM Radio, and I film this unintentionally.
